Caesars resorts and casinos are near some of the most beautiful natural landmarks, including the Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge by Atlantic City, the Mojave Desert National Preserve near Las Vegas, and many more national treasures. At Caesars, our passion for the preservation of our planet is at the core of our sustainable operations strategy. However, we know that a sustainable future depends on not only the actions take today, but also the impact of the generations to follow. That’s why Caesars Foundation’s long-standing partnership with the National Park Trust (NPT) is so important to us. Through involvement with its Buddy Bison school program, we are helping to teach kids life-long lessons about respect for the environment and how small, individual actions can add up to create a huge positive impact.
Our partnership with NPT has benefitted our employees and community members as well. Over the years, we have been proud to engage and educate our surrounding communities about environmental preservation and sustainable habits across the country. Within the last year, Caesars’ HERO and CodeGreen volunteers assisted NPT with hosting the annual Buddy Bison Carbon Reduction Contest in elementary schools in Atlantic City, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Council Bluffs and North Kansas City.
The Buddy Bison campaign teaches kids about conservation and the benefits of outdoor recreation, equipping them with tools and knowledge to become good stewards of the environment. Students competed over a ten week period in which they recorded environmentally responsible actions, such as recycling waste and reusing water bottles, on a weekly report card. The students earned points for every positive action; seeing their scores grow as their carbon footprints shrank helped them to better appreciate the impact of their efforts. And what an outstanding effort they put in! After ten weeks, 249 students across nine classes succeeded in reducing an impressive total of 7,782 lbs. of garbage and 10,328 lbs. of green house gas (GHG) emissions. Imagine if every student in the country were to get involved!
After seeing the success of the Buddy Bison Carbon Reduction Contest in schools, we decided to bring this fun initiative to Caesars’ CodeGreen program late last year. With the support of the NPT, CodeGreen teams across multiple casino-resorts rallied around the inaugural Caesars Carbon Reduction Contest as a way to strengthen Caesars’ commitment to sustainable operations. Last September through December, employees competed to decrease energy and water consumption and develop new waste management efficiencies in food & beverage service, hotel rooms and meeting spaces. This competition inspired employees across Caesars locations to thrive as a team and creatively activate sustainability initiatives—at work and at home.
The carbon reduction scorecards have been turned in and the data is now being assessed. The top three Caesars locations with the most dramatic improvement in waste, water and energy reduction from 2013 will win a stipend to put on a celebratory event around their CodeGreen achievement. First place will win a $2,000 stipend; $1,000 will be awarded to second place and $500 will go to third place.
So which property drew the most internal support and cut the most carbon? All will be revealed this coming April, just in time for Earth Day!
