Our seventh annual CodeGreen Challenge (CGC) kicked off last week with Earth Hour. The Challenge is an extension of our award-winning environmental program, CodeGreen, designed to bring attention to environmental conservation, as well as the health and wellness benefits of an active and healthy lifestyle. Through May 1st, participating properties will heighten environmental awareness among our Caesars team members and guests through creative activities and promotions that will educate and support environmental consciousness. We know that engagement is increased when we involve our strategic partners. That’s why we are building on our strong relationship with park preservation nonprofit National Park Trust (NPT) to kick the CodeGreen Challenge up a notch this year.
National Park Trust Partnership in Action
The games will address what the author of Last Child in the Woods author, Richard Louv, calls “Nature Deficit Disorder,” or NDD. Yes, it sounds like a strange medical condition, but it is actually a term Louv coined to bring attention to the separation of children from the outdoors as a result of increasingly indoor-focused childhoods. Believe it or not, Americans spend 95 percent of our time indoors!
The Caesars Foundation has been a partner of NPT for six years, encouraging kids and families in a variety of ways to spend more time outdoors. We’ve helped to fund the Buddy Bison initiative that gives park experiences to under-served schools across the U.S and been a sponsor of Kids to Parks Day, when various Caesars locations host wellness-focused events. In 2014 and 2015, we also collaborated with NPT to launch a carbon reduction contest with students to improve their environmental footprint at home and in the classroom.
Let the CodeGreen Challenge Begin!
The NPT games are just one component of what’s cooking this year during our CodeGreen Challenge. Guests and team members are being engaged in a variety of other ways to improve Caesars’ and their personal commitment to the environment. Individuals and properties will compete in numerous categories, which include how a property highlights sustainability on the property with guests and team members, and within their own community.
Team members can win prizes by tweeting pictures of themselves doing something outside using the #CodeGreenAtWork hastag. The prize packages for properties are valued at $2,000-$4,000 and include a celebratory food day of healthy and locally sourced foods, and Total Return credits for key employee contributors to put towards their choice of travel, events, and merchandise.
This year, we are expanding the challenge to guest involvement. Anyone visiting or staying at a participating property is encouraged to tweet a picture of themselves with one of Caesars CodeGreen message. Whether it’s a green specialty cocktail or CodeGreen items around the hotel or casino make sue to use the #CodeGreen hashtag for a chance to share your support for sustainability. The “green” drink will be served throughout April in a compostable or reusable cup at select locations.
Last year, 15 regions competed through activities ranging from park and highway clean-ups to setting new waste diversion highs. These outstanding accomplishments set the bar high for this year’s challenge. We look forward to your participation in our CodeGreen Challenge to help us bring environmental awareness to the masses!
